According to Blomberg, this phrase “reads more literally, They did not see anyone but Jesus only. The word only (monos) comes at the end of the sentence for emphasis” (Blomberg 264). Moses and Elijah are no longer present, and Jesus continues to be the focus of the text. Carson states, “Jesus is perceived to be superior to Moses and Elijah and, indeed, to supersede them (vv. 5, 8)” (Carson 385). Jesus himself is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and all the themes traced throughout the Old Testament...
